Gypsy Kid With Bread Loaf

Manouche Living With The Gypsies of France.  A great first book from author Nigel Parsons, certainly worth a read. Interesting, educational and thought provoking. Having read the book myself, I can say with confidence that it is a good, easy and fun book to read. Very well written and full of interesting information about a very unexplored and misunderstood way of living.

I have recently just completed reading the book myself, and certainly enjoyed it. I am not someone who reads much, so the fact that I read the whole book, back to front within a week says a lot in itself. I found it to be incredibly insightful and very well written. I am also someone who enjoys travelling and experiencing different cultures. So, the subject is one that interests me. As the Manouche way of living is one that has had very little exposure to the rest of the world, it provided insight & some education on a life style & culture that can be hard to find anywhere else.

The author, Nigel Parsons, found himself being accepted as one of the Manouche ‘family’. Becoming godfather (or ‘Kirvo‘ in the Manouche tongue) to not one, but three Manouche children. After first meeting and enjoying the warmth and friendship he experienced during his first wine harvest with this specific ‘company‘ of Gypsies. Nigel returned and lived with his new found Manouche ‘family‘ during the spring and summer months (the months of travelling, harvests and festivals) each year, for several years during the 1970’s. The book also explores other areas of Nigel’s life; times in Switzerland, Colombia and the UK & also his own blood family.

Nigel went on to lose touch with, and then reconnect with the Manouche in the 2010’s. This provides a well rounded ending to the book and exposes just what has happened to this Gypsy culture over the course of almost 5  decades. I am pretty sure that you will be hard pushed to find any other author who has had such an experience. Living and knowing the lives of a ‘company‘ of Manouche Gypsies, that spans over such a length of time. As you will find with this Book.

I can highly recommend this as a great book to anyone who enjoys reading and learning about other cultures, and life itself.

Enjoy 🙂
